Invariably, when people find out we publish a food blog on restaurants in Sarasota, we’re asked what our favorite restaurant is, or who serves the best (Italian/Sushi/Steak/Seafood . . . ) in Sarasota, or my personal favorite “Where is the best place to eat that doesn’t serve food?”
OK, so nobody has ever asked that last question, but if they did, we know the answer – The Shamrock Pub on the north side of Ringling Boulevard, just around the corner off Lime Avenue.
Tell me more, I hear you say!
Well, for one thing, this year marks the fifth annual Summer Chef Jam, held every Monday night during the summer at Shamrock Pub, with many of the area’s superstar chefs whipping up three courses of incredibly tasty bites from 7:00-9:00 p.m. and includes all-you-care-to-consume craft beer for the paltry sum of $25! Derek Anderson, owner of the Shamrock Pub, joins with Edible Sarasota Magazine (great publication!) to produce this fun, laid back event.
How popular is this event? Well, in the time it took for you to read this far, they probably just sold out the coming Monday’s event. Seriously.
At the time of this writing, Chef Darwin Santa Maria of Darwin’s on 4th, Sarasota’s all-world Peruvian chef, and Caleb Taylor, Chef de Cuisine of Jack Dusty’s at the Sarasota Ritz-Carlton, and Chef Evan Gastman of The Cottage Restaurant, Siesta Key, have already wowed the sold-out crowds at this cozy neighborhood pub.
Still on tap for summer 2015 (pun intended,) The Michael’s on East crew(7/13); Louie’s Modern (7/20); local legendary Chef Paul Mattison (7/27): Mark Woodruff of M.A.D.E. (8/3): and two time James Beard Award nominee Steve Phelps of Indigenous Restaurant (8/10). Whew! That’s a lot of Chef power!
And, since Shamrock Pub doesn’t even have a kitchen, all the food this year is being prepared in Chef Ken Smith’s “chefs2u” food truck, with the grand finale happening on August 31st, when all of the participating chefs will be fêted by Chef Smith, along with anyone quick enough to get their tickets early!
Now, if by some chance you can’t make it to the Chef Jam, (silly you!) you can still get the near-mythical Bee Sting pizza (underlined for a reason!) prepared by Polpo Pizza every Thursday night, starting at 8 p.m. until they run out – and they will run out! If you haven’t tried a Bee Sting Pizza, I can assure you it is worth the trip.
And Saturday nights you’ll be able to grab a tasty taco and more from Ri Quisimo Taco Truck . . . the line starts forming at 8:00 pm.
Aside from maybe being the town’s friendliest little pub, The Shamrock Pub is soccer central (if you want more fun than a body can stand,) as well as regularly scheduled live music events, DJs, and an annual St. Patrick’s Day Bash that blows all the others out of the water! Shamrock is Sarasota’s own “Cheers,” without the ditzy bartender.
One thing to remember . . . Shamrock doesn’t take credit cards, but there is an ATM machine, cleverly tucked into the red phone booth.
